Building a Simple Apothecary Shop
No matter how healthy a person is, he will, at one time or another, become sick. Naturally, he will have to take some medication, but what if he is far away from the nearest drugstore? In medieval times, the sick person usually went to an apothecary, a medical professional who sells and sometimes formulates medicines to patients and doctors. Apothecaries often operated through a retail shop, which was sometimes constructed as part of a home.
If you are a licensed pharmacist living in a faraway town, why not start your own apothecary shop if you have an extra room to spare? You will do a great service for the townspeople since they will have a ready source of over-the-counter medication.
The first thing you should do is to check with your local government if they would allow you to set up such a shop. If they do, ask for the requirements. In most cases, certifications from pharmaceutical organisations are needed. After procuring the certificates, you can now start constructing your shop.
After cleaning the place up, have a counter constructed; a bar counter is a good design reference. Behind the counter, you should also place some shelves where you can display your medicines. You can also place a refrigerator at the side for drugs that need to be kept in a cool environment. At the back of the counter, you should have a storeroom to keep other medicines. Additionally, have your shop painted in bright colours to make it look welcoming and friendly. Install lights that give off a cheerful and warm glow. It would also be good if you can install large glass windows so people can see what is inside as well as allow natural daylight to come in. As a final touch, add decorations such as flowers, plants, rugs, and paintings.
